A Message from the Board

Founded by five parents with children affected by bipolar disorder, we have made great strides since our first meeting in June 2007. Well aware of the trauma that bipolar disorder causes for patients and their families, we felt compelled to do something constructive to help. Our mission is three fold; to fund research, reduce stigma through education, and offer care and support services to those affected. Unfortunately services can be difficult to find, both for the patient and his/her family. We have developed a stellar scientific advisory board with many of the country’s top behavioral researchers. Our honorary board is an extremely talented group who will help guide our efforts. We are also assembling a patient advisory committee to provide insight and information about what types of programs are worthy for our funding.

Currently, we are in the process of applying for our 501 3 C non-profit status. In the meantime, we are operating tax-exempt under the umbrella of the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation which allows us to operate as a nonprofit organization. Any donations will be tax exempt.
Our first awareness campaign, Change4Change, held on National Bipolar Awareness Day, brought in over $5,000. We plan on expanding the scope of this opportunity and hope to introduce it to large grocery store chains. Our inaugural fundraiser, “Imagine”, will be held February 29, 2008. (please see the link below for details.)

The foundation has several projects already underway. Our mission statement is three-tiered: To eliminate bipolar disorder through the advancement of research: to provide and enhance care and support services for all affected: and to erase associated stigma through public education. This year, we will invite scientists throughout the world to submit grant proposals. Our exemplary Scientific Advisory Board will review the proposals and make recommendations on which ones to fund. Presently, we are promoting an educational program, “Break the Silence” to introduce knowledge about mental health and illness into school districts and scouting programs, and we will once again be sponsoring a mental health fair in the spring.

We are very excited about this organization and looking forward to working towards our goals. We have lofty aspirations, but are determined and optimistic that we can do our part to make life just a little bit better for those affected.

Thank you for your interest and support!
